The recently released cartoon music video for new song “Are You Lost in The World Like Me” by Moby & The Void Pacific Choir is making the rounds online this week for its statement on our unrelenting obsession with screens.
The cartoon resembles “Steamboat Willie” crossed with old school “Popeye”, and follows a caricature of Moby as people hustle and bustle around him, with their eyes glued to their phones and oblivious to their surroundings. It’s funny it takes an animation to have me realize how I act like all of the characters in that music video, from watching the screen and walking into everyone/thing to swiping left and right to taking and posting selfies. So it got me thinking….
Not only are people willfully ignorant of their environment, they’re also numb to their emotions and choose to record tragedy with their devices rather than taking action. With subtle references to Tinder, PokemonGO, Snapchat filters, and countless other cultural touchstones, this video is a poetic if harsh reminder to us all to look up every once in a while. Perhaps we can all use a little breather from our digital worlds.
What do you think? Did you enjoy his video? Does it make you wonder?
